A Return to Our Roots: Why Organic Farming is Karnataka's Future
A Return to Our Roots: Why Organic Farming is Karnataka's Future
By Shri Siddaramaiah, Chief Minister of Karnataka
My dear people of Karnataka, especially our अन्नದಾತರು (Annadataru) – our farmers,
Karnataka has always been synonymous with agriculture. Our land, blessed by the rivers Cauvery and Krishna, has sustained our civilization for centuries. But for the last few decades, in the pursuit of higher yields, we have allowed our sacred soil to be burdened by excessive chemical fertilizers and toxic pesticides.
Today, I address you not just as your Chief Minister, but as a son of this soil, to champion a movement that is critical for our health, our environment, and the future profitability of our farmers: Organic Farming.
The Heavy Price of the Green Revolution
While the Green Revolution ensured food security, it came at a high cost. The indiscriminate use of synthetic inputs has led to:
Poisoned Soil: Our topsoil is losing its natural fertility, microbial life, and organic carbon content, turning it into mere dust that requires more and more chemicals each year just to produce the same yield.
Compromised Health: Residues of harmful chemicals are finding their way onto our plates, contributing to serious health issues for our families and future generations.
Increased Debt: The ever-rising cost of chemical inputs—urea, DAP, and potash—is trapping our small and marginal farmers in a vicious cycle of debt.
We must stop poisoning our Mother Earth. This must be the end of the chemical era in Karnataka's agriculture.
Organic Farming: A Path to Prosperity and Health
Organic farming, or Savayava Krishi, is not just a return to ancient wisdom; it is the most scientific and sustainable way forward. It addresses all the challenges we face today:
Soil Rejuvenation: By relying on bio-inputs like Jeevamrutha (microbial culture made from cow dung and urine) and vermicompost, we restore the natural vitality and fertility of the soil. A healthy soil ecosystem is the backbone of robust agriculture.
Reduced Input Costs: When a farmer produces his own manure and pest control agents on the farm, the need to purchase expensive external chemicals is drastically reduced, directly boosting the farmer's net income.
Premium Market Value: Organic produce is highly sought after, both domestically and internationally. Our farmers deserve to earn a premium price for the healthy, toxin-free food they produce. This shift from volume-based farming to value-based farming is key to making agriculture a truly profitable profession.
Environmental Protection: Organic methods conserve water, enhance biodiversity, and significantly lower our carbon footprint. We must act as responsible custodians of our environment for the benefit of the future.
Government Initiatives to Support the Transition
My government is fully committed to spearheading this transition across the state. We have robust schemes designed to provide hand-holding and financial assistance to every farmer who chooses the organic path:
Scheme Name
Focus Area
Impact
Savayava Bhagya Yojana
Cluster-based Organic Conversion
Provides financial and technical assistance to farmers organized into hobli-level associations for collective organic production and certification.
Organic Certification
Quality Assurance & Market Access
We are strengthening the Karnataka State Organic Certification Agency (KSOCA) to provide transparent and affordable group certification, ensuring our products meet global quality standards.
Strengthening Federations
Market Linkages
We are empowering the Regional Federations of Organic Farmers’ Associations to handle collection, grading, processing, branding, and direct marketing, ensuring a fair price reaches the producer.
A Pledge for a Healthier Karnataka
We are making a conscious choice to prioritize health over temporary yield gains. I call upon all our farmers to join the Savayava Krishi movement. Utilize the resources and support systems the government has put in place. Do not fear the transition; the rewards—in terms of soil health, family health, and financial security—are substantial and long-lasting.
To the citizens of Karnataka: you too play a crucial role. Choose organic products. Support the farmer who chooses the sustainable path. Your demand creates the market, and your choice determines the future of our food.
Let us work together to make Karnataka a model state for sustainable, profitable, and poison-free agriculture. Our soil is our future.
Jai Hind! Jai Karnataka!
